Lines of pepper (Capsicum annuum) selected for resistance to bacterial spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) in PI 163192, PI271322, PI308787, PI369994, PI244670, PI241670, PI377688 and PI224451 were uniformly resistant to bacterial spot but were susceptible to Phytophthora blight (Phytophthora capsici), except PI163192, which showed some tolerance to P. capsici. Lines selected for resistance to Phytophthora blight in PI 123469, PI 201232, PI 201234, PI 224445, P 51, AC 2258, Riogrande, and Gosung were uniformly resistant to P. capsici, but were susceptible to bacterial spot. Growth and fruit characteristics of the lines selected for resistance to either of the two diseases were investigated and strategies for exploitation in breeding for disease resistance were discussed.
